My name is Megan Brown McManus. I was born in 1976 in Bangor, Maine and I currently live in South Philadelphia, PA with my fat cat Tater Tot.
I received a BFA from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston affiliated with Tufts University in 1999. That same year I drove my grandmother's Pontiac LeMans across the country to Los Angeles. I was drawn to L.A. because it is warm and a few of my professors thought I would like the art scene there. My Aunt Pam and cousin Michele (co-founder of the Cannibal Flower), welcomed me with open arms. I exhibited my drawings and paintings at several galleries including POST and Angles Gallery. My work was reviewed in publications such as the LA Times and Art in America. In 2003 I enrolled in the MFA program at California State University, Long Beach. Not long after I rescued a 3 week old emaciated kitten who became my Tater Tot. She is now far from emaciated. After graduating in 2006 we packed up and moved to the Midwest. From 2006 – 2008 I was as an Assistant Professor of Drawing and Painting at the University of Kansas, Lawrence. After living in Lawrence for a year I moved to Kansas City and rescued a stray dog who I named Gil. He was constantly by my side until he passed away on September 22, 2012. Since moving to Philadelphia in September of 2008 I have taught drawing and painting at the Moore College of Art and Design, University of the Arts, Tyler School of Art and the Main Line Art Center.
Influences: Judy Bamber, Leigh Bowery, Leonora Carrington, Karen Finley, Martin Johnson Heade, Ingres, Constance Mallinson, Sylvia Plimack Mangold, Agnes Pelton, Martin Puryear, Rafeal, Julia Randall, Hanneline Rogeberg, Linda Stark, Concept Cars (German, British & Japanese), Origami Paper, Fabric & Succulent Plants.
